15 best wedding cakes from Greece
Wedding cake or just a cake. If you’ve ever been in Greece or if you live here, know that you can get a cake almost in every bakery or in “zaxaroplastio” (read: zaharaoplastio), as the locals call it.
Ready made or custom order. Your local baker can most probably provide you with your special cake.
Although wedding cakes are maybe starting to take a back seat as some of wedding desert trends report, brides still want the beautiful wedding cake to be a part of their theme. In this article, we’ll explore some options from Greece, for your best Greek wedding cake!
First, let’s look at Greek wedding traditions
It may come as a shock to you, but it is quite popular for many Greek weddings to actually have a fake cake for their photo op and the “show”.
What is a fake cake?
Fake cakes are pre-made non-consumable cakes, filled with Styrofoam or other foam materials, covered with fondant and decorated in a traditional way. The cakes are ready decorated and come in a variety of styles to choose from. Faux wedding cake usually has an opening in the back where a piece of real cake is inserted, so that the couple can feed it to each other for the traditional photo op.
Another well practised option is to have only one fake tier – the bottom one. This offers more support to your cake and of course makes your cake look bigger. Perfect for smaller weddings that want to display a bigger cake.
Why fake cakes?
- Lower costs. They are perfect for big wedding parties. Greek weddings are especially famous for their number of guests, thus the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. It’s much more affordable to have one cake for show, but serve another, less flashy cake to your many guests.
- Traditional design. For easy decision making, all the cakes are pre-designed, where you just pick the cake you like from the catalogue.
- Less worry. You can be sure your cake will survive the hot summer days or nights and will not loose it’s shape or tip over.
